Since 2012 I’ve written a series of articles for Gamer Network about how games evolve during development. I work with the original developers to uncover the design documents for these games, spending months investigating and gathering research.
For example, did you know Deus Ex was originally set in a Russian-occupied Texas? Or a cancelled Thief sequel would have rebooted the series in a modern setting? Did you know Doom was initially a four-player co-op game?
I believe these ‘deleted scenes’ are tragically under-valued. As a journalist I’ve lectured and written at length about the need for the publishers and developers to preserve the history of the medium, before it is lost for good.
